The West Australian Chief Justice says Indigenous people need to be more actively involved in keeping Aborginal juveniles out of the criminal justice system.

Chief Justice Wayne Martin told a Curtin University forum that Aboriginal children made up about 68 per cent of juveniles in jail, while adult indigenous prisoners form 40 per cent of the adult prison population.

He says the rate of criminal justice supervision of Aboriginal young people in WA is almost double the national average.

Chief Justice Martin acknowledged Governments’ efforts to improve the juvenile criminal system but he says more needs to be done to address the causes of offending by Aboriginal juveniles. …Go to article.
