A Report on a trial in four Cape York communities, in which parents of children who do not attend school are counselled, shows that more than half of those whose conduct is questioned ignore the initial counselling. But that is the only negative identified in the first year of the trial, in which if truancy persists, parents’ welfare payments are managed by a local group.
